Village Green Days

In the early 1970's the River Olt was mechanically straightened, the dead arms have since become important ponds, lakes and wetlands; even providing suitable habitat for the European beaver (reintoduced in the late 1990's). In fact, near the village of Miklosvar, one of these wetland areas is a protected nature reserve, exhibiting rare flora, such as Yellow Flags and attracting numerous birds, including the Lesser Spotted Eagles, Lapwings, and Little Egrets. Numerous species of frog inhabit these areas. Crayfish can also be found. The reality is that even a protected wetland is under threat from pollution and rubbish. The litter that collects in these waterbodies can range from plastics bottles to old crops that have not been burnt (the traditional method); the latter, for example, poses a serious threat to the chemical composition of ponds, causing devastation to pondlife in a matter of years.

KCT is working with local people to create environmental awareness about the natural value of the wetlands that lie close to the villages of Miklosvar, Kozepajta and Nagajta. Village Green Days offer young people in particular an opportunity to learn more about their local environment by exploring it with a visiting naturalist. Educational events take place throughout the year. Village Green Days also offer an opportunity to get people involved in cleaning up the rivers, streams and ponds near the villages, this normally takes place in early spring and late autumn.

Village Green Days not only require committed individuals to organise events and volunteer their time, but also practical materials, including gloves, bags and nets; furthermore, there are extra costs associated with having large amounts of refuse removed by the Local Authority. KCT also plans to put up signs indicating the presence of a protected area, as well as distribute information on caring for the local environment.
